Player Safety, Dangerous Play Guidance and England Squash Membership

Dear all,

Following some recent on-court situations, the Club would like to remind all members of England Squash’s guidance on dangerous play. Player safety is paramount, and everyone has a responsibility to help keep play safe and enjoyable.

England Squash defines dangerous play as actions that may put you or your opponent at risk, including:

  1. Hitting the ball at an opponent: Playing a shot when there is a risk of striking your opponent with the ball or racket. Play should stop immediately and a let is usually called; a penalty stroke may be awarded if the return would have been a good shot.
  2. Excessive swings: Using an oversized backswing or follow-through when an opponent is too close.
  3. Bumping or pushing: Unnecessary physical contact, including pushing an opponent aside.
  4. Dangerous movement: Failing to clear the path to the ball or front wall, or not moving away after playing a shot.
  5. Dangerous shots: Playing shots that pose a risk of injury to yourself or your opponent.

To help avoid dangerous play, the Club reasonably expects all members to:

  1. Clear the path after playing a shot, giving your opponent a clear route to the ball and front wall.
  2. Control your swing, especially when your opponent is close behind you.
  3. Stop and call “let” if there is any doubt or risk of injury.
  4. Maintain distance, particularly around the T when out of position.

The Club also strongly recommends that all players, regardless of standard or experience, wear protective eyewear when playing squash or racketball. Protective eyewear can be purchased online using the following links:

In addition, the Club would encourage all members to consider taking out England Squash membership. Previously this was arranged through the Club, but this is now a separate process that members complete individually.

If you opt for either Just Play (£15 per year) or Pay & Play Plus (£25 per year), membership includes a range of benefits, including:

  • Up to £10 million public liability cover - Personal accident insurance, including dental treatment, hospital costs, physiotherapy and X-rays
  • Discounts with PDH Sports
  • Access to SquashTV and other partner benefits

Full details and sign-up information are available here:

If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the above, please speak to a member of the committee.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our courts safe for everyone.

Kind regards,
Squash Club Committee
