British Junior Open 2025

Dear Members,

We are gearing up to host the prestigious British Junior Open (BJO) at our club this week with competitive matches starting Thursday 2nd January completing Sunday 5th January! This iconic tournament is just around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited to play such an important role in what is widely regarded as the most prestigious junior squash event in the world. Alongside the World Squash Federation (WSF) World Juniors, the BJO is considered the de facto world championship for younger age groups, showcasing the future stars of our sport.

First held in 1949, the British Junior Open has grown into a globally renowned event. Since 1999, it has featured age categories of U13, U15, U17, and U19, with the U11 category added in 2018, offering even more opportunities for the youngest talents to compete.

This year, our club will be hosting matches from the U17 and U19 draws throughout the week. Among the exciting talents to watch is Adam Hawal, the top seed for the BU17 category in 2025. Adam is no stranger to success—he finished third in the BJO BU17 last January and has reached five semi-finals on the PSA Tour this year. We’re proud to provide a platform for players of this calibre to compete, alongside many other incredible athletes from around the world. The tournament operates using what is known as a Monrad system, this means participants will all play the same number of matches to ascertain their final position where ranking points are earnt. As championship contenders will gravitate to the finals at University of Birmingham, as the tournament progresses, there are competitive matches still up for grabs.

Hosting the British Junior Open is both an honour and a huge milestone for our club, our largest tournament in terms of matches to date. The prestige and recognition that come with this event, along with the much-needed financial boost, will help us continue to grow and thrive as a club. As we mentioned recently, hosting the tournament has already generated around £2,500 for the club through hosting fees and practice court bookings.

Of course, hosting a tournament of this scale does come with some challenges, and we understand the frustration around the lack of court availability during this time. We do apologise for this and want to thank you for your patience and understanding. As a token of our appreciation, we are continuing to offer £1 court bookings to members from the 25th of December to the 12th of January.

We encourage you to come along and watch the action if you can. You’ll have the opportunity to witness some of the best junior players in the world competing for one of squash’s most coveted titles. The matches will begin from 9am, with plenty of incredible squash to enjoy across both male and female categories.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to an exciting week of squash!

Thanks,

Sutton Coldfield Squash Club Committee
